Antipode

  • Choreographer: Filip Van Huffel
  • Dancers: Robert Guy, Steven Martin, Matthew Slater, Brian Tjon Tjauw Liem
  • Composer/musician: Joris Vanvinkenroye/BASta!

Four great young male dancers are joined by a double bass player as they perform a raw and exhilarating piece of athletic dance. Powerful and energetic movement demonstrates the skill of the dancers and emphasises their connection with the live soundscore.

Antipode - Retina Dance Company

Antipode takes its initiation from innate polar opposites in and around the human body. As human beings we are constantly being challenged by opposition, even verticality commits us to engage with gravity, significance, magnitude and energy. How do we counteract the force of gravity and how do we survive in a world of other people and objects, in an unmistakable web and game of opposites?

Antipode - Retina Dance Company

The five individuals share the same stage but are on their own journey, with no shared goals and no fear, challenging their own physicality. They collide, caress, fight, play and reject as they stampede along their own pathway. Quirky solos interrupt feisty duets and athletic group work.

Joris Vanvinckenroye on Double BassAntipode, choreographed by Filip Van Huffel is set to a soundscore by Belgian composer, musician Joris Vanvinckenroye. Joris is a double bass player who creates and manipulates musical scores both acoustically and electronically. For Antipode he has created a new sound score that drives the movement with percussive acoustics and supports the flow with manipulated soundscapes.

Joris performs live on stage where possible, allowing the audience to witness the interaction between the dance and music, the dancers and the musician. The dynamic power and range forcing the body to engage in movement.
