Antipode
How do we deal with hidden extremes that challenge our basic, human existence? How do we fight with a nature that both supports and destroys us? How do we counteract the force of gravity and how do we survive in a world of other people and objects, in an unmistakable web and game of opposites?
These challenges form the premise for seven performers, six exceptional dancers and one bass player, to create a captivating and dynamic performance of extremes. These seven individuals share the same stage but are on their own path with no shared goals and no fear, exerting their own physicality, exploring their own extremes. They collide, caress, fight, play and reject as they stampede along their pathway with commitment and single vision.
Antipode takes its initiation from innate polar opposites in and around the human body. As human beings we are constantly being challenged by opposition, even verticality commits us to engage with gravity, significance, magnitude and energy. Our subconscious locks us to our personality, innate and unchanging, forcing us to behave in our own unique way. Our skeletal system, brain and nervous system support us to survive our personal world of opposition.
Collaborators
Antipode, choreographed by Filip Van Huffel will be set to a soundscore by Belgian composer, musician Joris Vanvinckenroye. Joris is a double bass player who creates and manipulates musical scores both acoustically and electronically. For Antipode he will create a new sound score where he drives the movement with percussive acoustics and supports the flow with manipulated soundscapes. Creating the music alongside the dance creation period will enable both dancers and musician to embody the rhythm, atmosphere and energy from the beginning, with both artistic components informing one another.
Joris will perform live on stage where possible, allowing the audience to witness the interaction between the dance and music, the dancers and the musician. The dynamic power and range forcing the body to engage in movement.
Antipode is the power of singular vision and its opposite, and the possibilities our body has to deal with in extremes of behaviour, action and interaction and how we cope when dealing with someone else’s opposite extreme?
