Axelle Kennes - Composer

Axelle Kennes in a recording studio

Axelle is a pianist and composer, but uses her interest in other art forms as a source of inspiration. She studied piano at The Royal Flemish Conservatoire of Antwerp where she graduated with a master’s degree in music. Since 2002 she started composing her own music and is currently studying composition with Wim Henderickx and Lucas Van Hove. Alongside composing for a small chamber ensemble (Jagatjothi for English Horn and Guitar and Cuerpo de Mujer, to texts by Pablo Neruda, for mezzo soprano, flute, cello and piano), her composition interests lay in the interaction between different art forms.

In 2002 she collaborated with silversmith Helena Schepens from the Antwerp Academy of Visual Arts to create L’Esprit du Silence, combining the three dimensional objects with the shape and structure of original music as a fourth dimension. In 2006, Axelle worked as composer, director and musician on two dance performances, TeRein and Smashed Looking Glass. As a pianist, Axelle works predominantly with Aranis. After their first CD release in November 2005, the ensemble won the prestigious chamber music competition ‘Gouden Vleugels’. Their first tour began in October 2006.
