Professional Development Weekend in Leicester

A two-day professional development workshop directed by Filip Van Huffel for professional dancers, choreographers dance teachers, final year university students and graduate dancers.

This workshop is specifically geared towards gaining new skills and developing personal working methodologies to create dance material, choreograph and structure movement material into new and challenging ways.

This workshop takes place between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September at The PACE Building, De Montfort University, Richmond Street, Leicester LE2 7BQ.

We are offering an Early Bird fee of £52 until 2pm on Friday 30 August. After this the fee will be £72.

Structure of the weekend workshops:

Day 1: Learning
Session 1: Retina style technique class taught by Filip Van Huffel. The focus is on connectivity through the body, freedom of movement, dynamic movement content and floorwork.

Session 2: Filip will introduce choreographic working methodologies, improvisation techniques and devices used by Retina Dance Company. You’ll learn material and look at how this material can be used, developed and integrated into a specific choreographic way.

Session 3: You’ll be guided to look at how personal movement can be developed using the working methodologies introduced in the morning session. Retina’s distinct approach to partnerwork will also be introduced, using specific improvisation techniques and taught material.

Session 4: A discussion about structuring dance material, look at why, what and how of choreography. Through structured debate and brainstorming the content of day one will be evaluated and this will help to shape the content of day two.

Day 2: Into Practice
Session 1: Retina style technique class taught by Filip Van Huffel. The focus is on connectivity through the body, freedom of movement, dynamic movement content and floorwork.

Session 2: Everyone will work together in small groups to create their own concepts and choreographic ideas. Guided by Filip, you’ll develop a concept and working plan to create a joined performance.

Session 3: With a focus on choreography you’ll work in small groups to create material, using choreographic devices, developing the material in various forms and structuring the material into a short work, there will also be some focus on problem solving.

Session 4: At the end of day two there will be an informal sharing where the work will be presented to an interested group of peers and professionals followed by an informal discussion and the opportunity to ask questions.

Retina Youth Dance Company (RYDC) is for dancers aged 14 to 19 who want to gain high standard technical training, choreographic and performance experience. If this sounds like you then come along to our Open Call on Thursday 22 August between 6pm and 8pm.

Please wear comfortable clothes you can move easily in. There's no need to book a space but please arrive prompt for a 6pm start.

About RYDC
In addition to a high standard of training and gaining performance experience RYDC students have the opportunity to work with professional choreographers and dancers. RYDC exists for dancers who are committed to hard work and are willing to push themselves to develop their skills, as well as to have some fun in the process! RYDC classes take place every Thursday between 5.45pm and 8.45pm at College Street Centre, College Street, Nottingham NG1 5QA and cost £8/class.

Retina in Residence

Filip and the Retina company dancers will be in residence at Retina's UK base; College Street Centre in Nottingham during September to rehearse our latest work Corporalis.

On Monday 9 to Friday 13 September a technique class for professional dancers will run every morning between 10am and 11.15am. Class costs £6/day.

Creativity & Choreography-Summer School 2013


An energetic week of training in technique, improvisation, creating and performing for dancers aged 14+

This energetic week of classes and workshops, with Retina’s Artistic Director Filip Van Huffel and the Retina company dancers, will culminate in a sharing/performance inspired by Retina’s renowned full bodied, energetic and innovative style.

Retina’s Summer School is aimed at upcoming and professional dancers. Participants will be split into groups according to their level of experience.

Monday 19 – Saturday 24 August from 10am to 4pm

On Saturday there will be a sharing/performance for family and friends at 3pm*. This is your chance to show off the skills you’ve learnt during the Summer School. 

We're running this year's Retina Summer School at the wonderful Lakeside Arts Centre on the University of Nottingham campus.

The Pavilion Café at Lakeside will be open from 9am to 5pm each day serving hot dishes and sandwiches or you can bring your own packed lunch.

The fee for the Summer School is £100 per person, unless you are making payment from outside the UK when the fee is £101.50.

*No charge for entry into the sharing but charitable donations are welcomed.
