Retina Youth Dance Company

We are very pleased to announce the new members of Retina Youth Dance Company:

Claire Baxter, Sally Bower, Beth Dawson, Poppy Garton, Rose Garton, Danny Hyland, Dak Masharva, Alex Mason, Connor Minney, Kaajel Patel, Sophie Thorpe, Sean Wilcox

57 young people from across the East Midlands region auditioned for the company last Saturday at Leicester College.

The two morning technique classes led by Filip Van Huffel and Tory East enabled us to make first selections. 24 young dancers were then invited back for the afternoon session of contact work, improvisation and taught material.

We were impressed with the standard of all involved, and were pleased to see the commitment, energy and passion they each had for accomplishing the challenging material. It was a pleasure to watch.

At the end of the day, we did select 12 young dancers. We are very excited to be making a new work with this group of dancers and looking forward to taking them to Belgium for the Body Dynamics festival in October.

We are also continually looking for a sponsor to enable us to continue Retina Youth as an ongoing weekly class and project. This would enable us to develop this group as well as reach even more young dancers to help train to a high standard both technically and choreographically. Any suggestions gratefully received!

Curve Foundation commission

Filip has recently been in Edinburgh choreographing on The Curve Foundation Dance Company who are celebrating their 10th anniversary with this evenings’ premiere of their ambitious new production to Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. Filip was commissioned to create Spring, with other sections choreographed by Henri Oguike, Jonathan Watkins and Rui Lopes Graca.

The international company of classical dancers and collaborators will be performing in Brunton Theatre Musselburgh tonight and tomorrow. Artistic Direction is by Ross Cooper and lighting design by Kai Fischer.

Retina Sprang!

Retina Springs 08 was a great success for all involved. The 32 participants from across Europe danced their way through 2 weeks of creativity to achieve an impressive result. The final performance was at Sandfield Theatre on Friday 28th March and was a great success.

Live music by Matt Marks was supplemented with singing from some of the dancers to accompany a feast of movement from the participants. Ages ranged from 11 to 42, experience ranged from little to professional, enthusiasm and commitment was top form from all. Two choreographers Antje Hildebrandt and Eleni Edipidi also created their own work in Retina’s first Choreographic Lab at Dance4. Classes and feedback from Filip and Natalie contributed to their choreographic process and movement creation period, which culminated in their work integrated into the final performance.

Retina Springs 08

March 17th to 20th and 25th to 28th 2008

In celebration of the success of Retina Springs 2007, Retina is delivering a larger scale Springs 08 in collaboration with local organisations Lakeside Arts Centre, College Street and Dance4 funded by Arts Council England.

Retina will lead this dance festival in Nottingham over the Easter holiday for anyone over age 11, amateur and professional. Over the 8 days the participants will work in groups with Retina Dance Company to create a public performance for the final Friday evening at Sandfield Theatre, Nottingham on March 28th 2008. Divided in age and experience groups, the residency will be taught in different venues across Nottingham by Retina’s exceptional team of dancers and artistic director/choreographer Filip Van Huffel.

An additional element to this years Springs 08 is a Choreographic Laboratory based at Dance4. As a professional development opportunity the Lab will offer time and space for two choreographers to develop their own work. Daily technique class will be followed by choreographic tasks, with the aim to create a piece of work to be shown in the culminating performance. The Lab will be open to two choreographers and eight dancers.

Both the residency and Lab provide the opportunity to develop personal skills, enjoy moving and perform!
