Professional Development Weekend with Filip Van Huffel

A two-day professional development workshop directed by Filip Van Huffel for professional dancers, choreographers dance teachers, final year university students and graduate dancers.

This workshop is specifically geared towards gaining new skills and developing personal working methodologies to create dance material, choreograph and structure movement material into new and challenging ways.

This workshop takes place over Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 February in Nottingham. 

Day 1: Learning
Session 1: 10am- 11.30am
Retina style technique class taught by Filip Van Huffel. The focus is on connectivity through the body, freedom of movement, dynamic movement content and floorwork.

Session 2: 11.45am- 1pm
Filip will introduce choreographic working methodologies, improvisation techniques and devices used by Retina Dance Company. You’ll learn material and look at how this material can be used, developed and integrated into a specific choreographic way.

Session 3: 1.45pm 3.30pm
You’ll be guided to look at how personal movement can be developed using the working methodologies introduced in the morning session. Retina’s distinct approach to partnerwork will also be introduced, using specific improvisation techniques and taught material.

Session 4: 3.45pm – 4.30pm
A discussion about structuring dance material, look at why, what and how of choreography. Through structured debate and brainstorming the content of day one will be evaluated and this will help to shape the content of day two.

Day 2: Into Practice
Session 1: 10am- 11.30am
Retina style technique class taught by Filip Van Huffel. The focus is on connectivity through the body, freedom of movement, dynamic movement content and floorwork.

Session 2: 11.45am – 1pm
Everyone will work together in small groups to create their own concepts and choreographic ideas. Guided by Filip, you’ll develop a concept and working plan to create a joined performance.

Session 3: 1.45pm – 3.30pm
With a focus on choreography you’ll work in small groups to create material, using choreographic devices, developing the material in various forms and structuring the material into a short work, there will also be some focus on problem solving.

Session 4: 3.45pm – 4.30pm: Sharing.
At the end of day two there will be an informal sharing where the work will be presented to an interested group of peers and professionals followed by an informal discussion and the opportunity to ask questions.

All sessions will take place at Oak Field School and Sports College, Wigman Road, Nottingham NG8 3HW. (Google map)

Cost: £30 both days / £20 one day. This includes a ticket to the UK premiere of Corporalis at Nottingham Playhouse on Tuesday 19 February at 8pm.

Please download a registration form, complete and email back to Retina or drop off at reception at College Street Centre before the deadline of 5pm on Friday 15 February.
