Brian Hartley collaborated with Retina for the production This is not a body. He is a Glasgow based artist whose multi-disciplinary work combines visual art and design, theatre and dance and extensive work in arts education. Stillmotion brings together elements of this work, often in collaborative projects with other artists.
Through creating a large body of visual artwork inspired by dance, he has become involved in a working practice which brings together a visual and design vocabulary. Recent work as a designer for theatre and dance companies includes: Giant Productions The Songbird, Retina Dance Company This is not a body, Company Tabula Rasa Dance Company The Winter Room and Huff Puff and Away, Reeling & Writhing Only The Men, Borderline Theatre Company, Passing Places The Arches Theatre Company Beowulf and The Little Mermaid.
He has performed with dance and theatre companies such as transfigured, oceanallover, Tabula Rasa Dance Company, in November 2009 he performed with Russian theatre company Derevo, in a collaboration between The Arches, Glasgow; Conflux, Derevo and Akhe, Natura Morte, which was performed in Glasgow and Dresden.
For many years Brian has been involved in arts education projects, bringing his cross artform practice into creative partnerships with local authorities, schools and other organisations working with children and young people. In 2008 Imaginate Childrens International Theatre Festival commissioned stillmotion to create a large-scale participatory dance event for an early years audience. The resulting show, We Dance, wee groove, a highly interactive participatory dance event combing dance with live music and projected visuals was a popular success at the festival in May 2008 and was further presented at Glasgow’s Inspiration festival for children in Glasgow in 2008 and 2009. We Dance, wee groove will continue to develop in 2010 with further performances and Scottish touring, returning to Imaginate in May 2010.
