If A, then C A new solo dance and live music project for Filip Van Huffel (Retina Dance Company) and Joris Vanvinckenroye (BASta!/Aranis).
If A, then C is the first solo dance performance for Van Huffel since 2003, and is stimulated by the recent death of both his parents and the visual work of his father/visual artist Ernest Van Huffel .
If A, then C is a contrasting saga that takes place between two instruments, the double bass and the body, a duet of pure emotion in an abstract framework. If A, then C starts from experience, identity, strength, letting go, loss, desire, change, new beginnings and sudden endings. C is only possible if A has taken place. “Condicio Sine Qua Non”, the absolute condition.
If A, then C is a clear deviation from the larger group works that Van Huffel and Vanvinckenroye produced in recent years. A physical, visual and acoustic assault on the senses, supported by a unique movement and musical language.
"And then I felt sad because I realized that once people are broken in certain ways, they can not ever be fixed, and this is something nobody ever tells you when you are young and it never fails to surprise you as you grow older as you see the people in your life break one by one. You wonder when your turn is going to be, or if it's already happened " . Douglas Coupland , Life After God
The show starts with an inquiring movement solo by Filip Van Huffel, in which he takes a closer look at recent emotional events in his personal life. If A, then C is a solo that is searching for dynamic solutions for emotional trials. A choreographic work in which he invests in a new movement quality opening a different physical perspective to him. He projects and surrounds himself with distorted sculptures of his father in contrast with a quirky use of space and dynamics.
The second part of If A, then C is an innovative bass solo by Joris Vanvinckenroye. A new step in the development of the sampling technique wherein the double bass is used as input for a total sound. All aspects of the timbre of the double bass remain central. The sound develops from small, intimate fragility to a full, physically and rhythmically driven sound that transcends the instrument of the double bass. Also in this solo is the sound derived from materials such as bluestone, granite, clay and paint.
In part three of If A , then C, Van Huffel and Vanvinckenroye come together in a special combination. A constantly shifting space, filled with projection, movement and sound. A total experience that stimulates all the senses and that responds in an abstract manner to a range of emotions. This section looks for an interaction between the body and the instrument. How do they compare against each other in distance and emotion, colour and sound. Both artists deal with the same starting points but search for different solutions.
A thoughtful evening where two artists share their personal experiences in their own dynamic style.
