Layers of Skin is a multilayered performance event with bold choreography by Belgian/English choreographer Filip Van Huffel and his Retina Dance Company with live music by Joris Vanvinckenroye and his acclaimed Belgian chamber rock ensemble Aranis.
Layers of Skin is a multi-layered performance event uniting Filip Van Huffel’s passion for creating professional touring productions as well as leading large-scale participatory projects. Retina has firmly established itself as a company that enables other dancers, professional and enthusiast, to excel in process and performance. Retina's Artistic Director Filip Van Huffel has a unique ability to encourage individuals to move confidently and creatively and Layers of Skin brings this all together into one stunning performance event.
Layers of Skin plays with the idea of hiding. Three layers of skin hide our bones, organs and muscles. It hides who we are, what we think and what we desire. The work takes skin as a metaphor, a starting point for choreographic exploration, discovery of the skin, smell, touch, caress, repulse and joy.
The dancers shed their layers, exposing a fast-paced and full-bodied show, packed with quirky intricacies and fearless physical choreography.
Layers of Skin is a unique contemporary dance performance project that can exist in different formats and size. At its smallest, a production for six professional Retina company dancers with recorded music, and at the opposite end of the scale a work for six Retina dancers, six local professional dancers and 12 local community dancers with live music by Joris Vanvinckenroye and his seven musicians from the Belgian chamber rock ensemble Aranis, resulting in 31 people on stage!!
The premiere of this project took place in June 2011 during the 30-year celebration of Cultuurcentrum Berchem, Antwerp and has toured throughout the UK and Belgium since.
This dynamic performance event can be tailored to meet the needs of the booking venue.
Layers of Skin is available until end 2013.
